Dear friends from far away,

I just came to know that my book has been elected by a jury of readers in India. What an odd and marvellous news! I am writing these words to thank you from Mexico, where I live, where it is 7 in the morning, with the sun rising. I have never been to India, and yet, people in this faraway country know something about me. I don’t only mean to say they know my personal story which is present in the book and cannot be avoided (which, in itself, is strange), what I mean to talk about is the peculiar sharing that is that of literature. This putting together of words and sentences, that I have built not like a cathedral but like a tool, a sword, a machete, slowly sharpening its blade. This object now circulates among the hands and, above all, the minds of unknown people who live lives very different from mine. Reading creates a short-lived community, and what moves me the most is that this very magic happened for you while you were reading Triste Tigre. I am grateful for your choice. It is difficult to express my joy, which is deep. Thank you to each one of you.
