The Indian Institute of Science has a longstanding partnership with France in the field of mathematics, solid-state chemistry, high energy physics, biology, materials and particularly in the interdisciplinary field of water research. IISc opened doors for new collaborations with French Institutes by signing an MoU on 22nd November 2021.

The MoU establishes a 4-year partnership between IISC and 21 French departments under the aegis of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), Government of France. The signature of MoU saw productive discussions on the impact and relevance of water studies in various sectors like agriculture, biodiversity and human health. The new agreement will provide greater opportunities for collaboration in terms of student and faculty mobility, co-publications at the international level and funding opportunities.

The day also marked the celebration of the successful 20-year partnership of the Indo-French Cell for Water Sciences (IFCWS) which was established at IISc as early as 2001. IISc extended further support by sanctioning a completely renovated 2-floor building specifically dedicated to the Water Cell. Mr Thierry Berthelot, the Consul General of France at Bangalore, inaugurated the building.

The event was followed by the presentation of the National Order of Merit to Prof Rohini Godbole, Honorary Professor at the Centre for High Energy Physics, IISc, for her contributions to Indo-French scientific cooperation and empowerment of women in science. She spoke about the future of Indo-French partnership in the context of research and development as well as administrative responsibilities.

On the whole, the event strengthened the already existing partnership between India and France and at the same time threw light upon the many possibilities of maintaining and increasing these fruitful collaborations.
