Francophonie refers to men and women who share French as a common language. Around 343 million people speak French across five continents. Every year, on March 20th, we celebrate Francophonie worldwide.

On this occasion, the Embassy of France, the French Institute in India, the network of Alliances Françaises, and the Diplomatic Missions of French-speaking countries in India organize events throughout the year in collaboration with various institutions, including schools, universities, and cultural centers.

  • 343 million people speak French worldwide. By 2050, this number is projected to reach 715 million.

  • French is the official language in 29 countries.

  • French is the 5th most spoken language in the world (after English, Mandarin Chinese, Hindi, and Spanish).

  • French is the 2nd most learned foreign language in the world, including India.

  • It is the only language, along with English, that is taught in every country worldwide, with 114 million students.

  • In the business world, French is the 3rd most used language (after English and Mandarin Chinese).

  • French is the 4th most present language on the Internet (after English, Spanish, and Arabic).

  • French is the official language of many prominent organizations such as the United Nations, the European Union, the African Union, the WTO, NATO, the Red Cross, FIFA, and the International Olympic Committee.

  • The motto of Francophonie is: Equality, Complementarity, Solidarity.

  • The Francophonie flag (just like the Olympic flag) represents the colors of the five continents: Blue for Europe, Yellow for Asia, Black for Africa, Green for Oceania, Red for North and South America.

  • The 19th Francophonie Summit took place on October 4th and 5th, 2024, in France, at the Cité internationale de la langue française in Villers-Cotterêts—a site entirely dedicated to the French language and French-speaking cultures, inaugurated on October 30th, 2023, by Mr. Emmanuel Macron, President of France.

Every year, we celebrate Francophonie in India with as much enthusiasm as the rest of the world.

In 2024, more than 14,000 participants celebrated the French language through nearly 100 events held across India. These events were organized by schools, colleges, universities, the Alliance Française network, embassies & consulates, French Language Teachers’ Associations, and more.

The events featured music and dance performances, film screenings, exhibitions on Francophone countries, games, competitions, slam poetry, and more. Several film festivals showcasing Francophone cinema were organized throughout March. The Mauritian group Acoda’s musical concert, Patyatann, was widely appreciated in multiple Indian cities between March and October 2024. An international conference on Francophonie en Inde was held at Pondicherry University in September.

The French Institute in India successfully organized a video-making competition for French language learners on the theme “Equality at the Paris Olympics & Paralympics 2024” in March. The winners of the four prizes came from SVKM Parekh International School (Mumbai), Trio World Academy (Bengaluru), Alliance Française de Bombay (Santacruz), and Tagore Government Arts and Science College (Puducherry).

Around 1,000 French language students participated in a nationwide Read Aloud Contest, highlighting poets, authors, and writers from Francophone countries.

A Francophonie Mela was organized at Alliance Française de Delhi, bringing together representatives from various Francophone countries. The event featured interactive stalls sharing insights into Francophone cultures, along with a diverse array of delicious food from around the world.

In Mumbai, an exhibition on street art by Belgian artists from Francophone countries was showcased during a cocktail reception at the Residence of France. The soirée also featured a live concert by Quebec artist Nadaka and his Indian partner, Gopika, who performed their original classical compositions in Sanskrit, Tamil, and Hindi.

In Pondicherry and Delhi, prominent stakeholders from Francophone networks—including diplomats, researchers, and academicians—gathered at the Residence of France to celebrate Francophonie.

International Conference on Francophonie at EFLU

The French Institute in collaboration with EFLU is organising an International Conference on different themes like French and Francophone literature, didactics of FLE, translation, culture and linguistics.

Rendez-vous de l’IFI on Francophone Literature

The French Institute in India organises peer to peer information exchange sessions for French language teachers. The next session will focus on using Francophone literature in the classroom and will focus on Creole literature in the Indian context.
