A major figure on the hip-hop scene since the early 1990s, choreographer Mourad Merzouki works at the crossroads of multiple disciplines, weaving circus, martial arts, fine arts, video, and live music into his exploration of hip-hop dance. He began training at the age of seven at the circus school of Saint-Priest, in Lyon’s eastern suburbs, while also practicing martial arts. At fifteen, inspired by hip-hop culture, he turned to dance, and in 1989 co-founded the company Accrorap with Kader Attou, Eric Mezino, and Chaouki Saïd.
In 1996, Merzouki founded his own company, Käfig, named after his first choreographic work. Since then, he has created 40 productions that have reached over 2 million spectators in more than 4,000 performances across 65 countries.
Following the historic debut of breakdance at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and the immense success of Pixel in India in December 2023, Merzouki returned with Cartes Blanches, a groundbreaking Franco-Indian collaboration featuring Indian dancers. Under his and his team’s guidance, the performers brought this acclaimed French production to life, premiering in Bangalore on 7 September 2024.
