Born in Antananarivo, Johary studied law at the Université Paris-Panthéon-Assas and earned his PhD at the University of Réunion in 2002. Alongside his artistic and literary pursuits, notably with the characters Arius and Mary Batiskaf, he practiced and taught law in Réunion before returning to his hometown. Since 2016, he has dedicated himself entirely to literature.

He writes novels and short stories, translates, and adapts traditional tales.

In 2006, he and his wife, Sophie Bazin, founded Dodo Vole Publishing to promote the arts and literature of the southwestern Indian Ocean.

In 2018, he established the magazine Lettres de Lémurie, which annually publishes works by twenty-four authors from the region, either in French or in their native languages with a French translation.
