On February 20th, 2025, the French Institute in India hosted a dynamic symposium, “An Indo-French Day on Architecture and Urban Planning,” at the Alliance Française de Delhi. The event marked a significant milestone in the ongoing Indo-French cooperation in urban development, heritage conservation, and architecture. With over 80 attendees, including distinguished professionals from both India and France, the event provided an insightful platform for reflection, discussion, and the strengthening of professional ties in the field.

The Indo-French Young Urban Designers and Architects Programme (YUDAP), launched in 2018 by the Embassy of France in India, has been central to promoting collaboration between the two nations in urban design and architecture. Over the past six years, YUDAP has provided 35 Indian professionals with invaluable training placements in top French architecture firms, offering exposure to advanced urban design and architectural practices. The programme has targeted alumni from India’s prestigious institutions, CEPT University in Ahmedabad and School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) in Delhi.
In this special symposium, former YUDAP participants were invited to share their experiences and reflect on the professional connections they have built in France and how these connections have shaped their careers. The gathering served as a moment to reinforce the network of YUDAP alumni, positioning them as ambassadors of the Indo-French relationship in architecture and urban planning.
Additionally, the French Institute in India, in collaboration with the French Embassy, brought together key experts from both nations to discuss pressing topics in the sector, including heritage conservation, urban density, and the evolution of smart cities. These discussions were designed to identify strategic areas for collaboration in the years ahead and explore key themes such as the influence of international experience on architectural practices.
Notable speakers at the event included:
- Nicolas Gherardi, Deputy Director of the French Institute in India
- Anne Junius, Director for Strategy and Partnerships at the French Ministry for the Ecological Transition
- Hélène Fernandez, Director of Architecture at the French Ministry of Culture
- Marc Barani, Renowned French Architect
- Brice Piechaczyk, French architect, Vice President of AFEX (Agency for the Export of French Architecture Overseas), and Founder of Enia Architectes
Marc Barani delivered a compelling keynote, sharing insights on how his international travels, including experiences in Nepal, have shaped his architectural practice. Brice Piechaczyk engaged in a thought-provoking discussion about the impact of global exposure on architectural work.
The event was not only a celebration of past achievements but also a crucial step in strengthening the collaborative framework between India and France in architecture and urban planning. Discussions focused on new opportunities for growth and innovation, fostering a sustainable and interconnected future for both nations.
