The French Institute in India is partnering with French documentary production company Kolam Productions to invite submissions for two documentaries directed by emerging female directors from India.

These documentaries will be part of the acclaimed MYTHICAL CINEMAS collection, a series exploring legendary cinema houses across the world. The collection, initiated by Kolam Productions, showcases the cultural and historical significance of iconic theaters. The first season, featuring 12 episodes of 52 minutes each, was produced for Canal+ and aired on Ciné+ as well as other international platforms.

The pitch of the collection

Every cinema, wherever it is in the world, has a story to tell.

Some cinemas hold decades of memories—films that left lasting impressions, stories of childhood and youth, and moments of connection. Others represent the soul of a city, a community, or even a nation. Newer cinemas continue the tradition of storytelling, reinforcing cinema’s power to unite audiences across the globe.

With its rich cinematic heritage, India is home to countless legendary theaters, some still in operation and others remembered with nostalgia. Through this call, we seek to capture these incredible stories.
