Chowra Makaremi is an anthropologist and tenured researcher at the CNRS, where she received the CNRS Bronze Medal in 2021. She is the author of several books, including the graphic novel Prisonniers du Passage (co-authored with M. Parciboula, Steinkis, 2019) and Le Cahier d’Aziz. Au cœur de la révolution iranienne (Gallimard, 2011).
In 2019, she directed the film Hitch. An Iranian Story (Alter Ego, 78′), which won awards at the Jean Rouch Ethnographic Film Festival, Écrans Documentaires, Rencontres Internationales Sciences et Cinéma, and the Rendez-vous de l’Histoire du Documentaire Historique de Blois.
In Women! Life! Freedom! Echoes of a Revolutionary Uprising in Iran, she offers a deeply personal and academic account of her country. Growing up amid political struggle, shaped by her revolutionary grandfather and her militant mother—who was imprisoned and later murdered by Khomeini’s regime—Makaremi’s anthropological lens delivers a compelling narrative of power and resistance.
