I wanted to constitute a choreography in echo with what surrounds me. I see this residency as a possibility to open my artistic spectrum to India and to be in total immersion with the local artistic scene. Inspired by Afro-contemporary but also traditional Indian dances, my performance the spectator and myself to reflect on the importance of the place where we look.
Massandje Sanogo is a multidisciplinary artist with a background in acting who has expanded her practice to photography, video, dance, and DJing. She often blends these mediums for hybrid artistic results. In 2022, she created her first solo theater performance, Rapport sur ma vie antérieure de femme noire (Report on My Previous Life as a Black Woman), addressing discrimination and identity issues faced by Afro-descendants. During the Serendipity Arts Residency, Massandje interacted intensely with the diaspora communities situated in Delhi and learned more about the occupations they hold and their way of living in India. During her open studio, she presented the video-photo installation If I Was a GOAT, pt. 1, exploring the experiences of the African diaspora in Delhi and the Indian gaze on their community. Her open studio also featured live performances from diaspora members. Massandje through her learnings of the three different people and cultures aims to further this project, examining the connections between France, India, and Africa.
