My main objective was to undertake a research and creation project based on knowledge exchange, collaboration, and the study of materials. I wanted to pay attention to the future of materials, immersed in the vibrant colours of Jaipur and its surrounding area. How to approach colour from this new point of view, while enhancing the use of local resources? How to create a cross-disciplinary integration of craft techniques?
Martha-Maria Le Bars, a French artist who blends painting and sculpture, is known for creating speculative environments where colour becomes an independent force. With a background in textile design from the Duperré School, she integrates craft and textile techniques into her artistic practice, developing innovative approaches to painting beyond the traditional stretcher frame. Her work is characterised by slowness, gentleness, and fragility, offering an alternative to the fast pace of globalisation. As a result of her residency at Villa Swagatam, Martha-Maria had the opportunity to showcase two sculptures, Between (necklace, bangles, a woment story), at the Sculpture Park in Madhavendra Palace, Jaipur, as part of an international group exhibition curated by gallerist Peter Nagy, which runs until December 2024. She also led a workshop alongside Ojasvi Peshawaria during Jaipur Design Week 2024, focusing on the discovery of indigo for students from Jaipur's design schools. Additionally, her work was presented to President Emmanuel Macron during his visit to Jaipur, in January 2024, as part of an arts & crafts display at Amber Fort.
