Lauren Januhowski

Textile Artist

Guided by oral traditions and quiltmaking in American history and my family's past, my textile practices connect me to women's experiences. My work reflects the spiritual and supernatural bonds between women, inspired by science fiction, medieval allegories, and folk tales. As a resident of the Kalhath Institute, I aim to immerse myself in Lucknow’s rich textile history and receive teachings from their embroidery masters. By melding our personal stories and techniques, I hope to visually represent these connections, fostering intimacy and the willingness to share.

Lauren Januhowski (b. 1992, Houston) combines autobiographical stories with women's accounts through monotype-printed fabrics, assembled by sewing, embroidery, or weaving. Her detailed, layered work reflects her family's sewing traditions, exploring female narratives and emotions. A Cooper Union (BFA) and École des Arts Décoratifs de Paris graduate, her art has been exhibited at Galerie Treize-Dix, Magasins Généraux, Galerie Mansart, Galerie Christian Berst, Art Basel, and Gallery BimBam.
